What LotSite measures

Start with the big number: your total lot area, in square feet and acres. Enter an address, see the property on satellite imagery, and trace your boundary on the measuring grid. The total calculates as you paint.

Then go granular. A paintable grid lets you measure individual yard sections, grass, driveway, patio, garden beds, pool, and structures, each with its own square footage, so a fertilizer quote uses your lawn area, not your whole lot. A dedicated fence mode traces your fence perimeter in linear feet, and a tape-measure mode gives point-to-point distance measurements anywhere on the map.

None of it assumes your property is a tidy rectangle. Irregular shapes and boundaries, pie lots, flag lots, five-sided corner parcels, measure exactly the same way: paint what's there, read the number. For the methods behind it all, see how to measure your property.

LotSite is the fastest free way to measure any visible area on satellite imagery. It's not a legal lookup service. For that, use your county assessor's records or hire a surveyor. But for landscaping, quotes, planning, or curiosity? Just enter an address and trace what you see.

How to use LotSite

1. Enter an address. Any U.S. residential address works. The measurement tool opens centered on the property.

2. Check the satellite view. Recent imagery centered on the property. Find your lot, fences, driveway, and yard from above.

3. Paint what you want to measure. Pick a category, grass, driveway, patio, and click or drag across the map. Each cell you paint is counted.

4. Read your totals. The area breakdown updates live, with per-category square footage and product estimates for lawn projects.

Mistake to avoid: using one number for everything. Your lot area and your lawn area are very different figures. On a typical quarter-acre property, the house, driveway, and patio absorb a third to half of the total. Buy fertilizer against the lot figure and you'll overbuy by thousands of square feet; quote a mowing service the lot figure and the bid comes back high. Measure each surface separately and hand every contractor the number that actually applies to their job.

Mistake to avoid: pacing it off. Step-counting a yard feels close enough, but stride error compounds. Pace both sides of an area 10% short and the result lands nearly 20% low, because the error multiplies through both dimensions. An area figure built from paced-off sides can easily run 15โ€“20% from reality, which is the difference between the right number of bags and a second trip to the store.

Keep the numbers once you have them. A per-surface list, lawn, beds, driveway, fence length, gets reused constantly: fertilizer and seed are dosed per 1,000 sq ft, mulch by the cubic yard converted from bed area, fencing by the linear foot. Write the breakdown down (or screenshot it) and you'll never re-measure for the next project. It also makes bids comparable: divide any quote by your own square footage and a padded price stands out immediately.
