Lawn Care Cost: How It Is Priced

Lawn care is priced yard by yard, by local companies, and LotSite has no sourced price list for any city, so this page does not print one. It explains how mowing is priced, how to work out your own annual cost from a local quote, and gives one published reference figure for each region of the country.

Pricing

How mowing is priced

Per visit. A mowing company quotes a price for one visit, which covers mowing, trimming the edges and blowing the clippings off hard surfaces. You pay that price each time the crew comes, so the yearly bill is the visit price times the number of visits.

By lawn size. The price follows the area of grass the crew has to cut, not the size of the lot. The house, driveway, patio and planting beds are not mowed, so a company that prices from the lot size on a listing is pricing ground you do not have in grass. Give the grass area and the quote will be closer to the bill.

What changes the price. Two lawns of the same area can be priced differently. The things a company looks at:

  • Slopes and uneven ground, which slow the mower down.
  • Gates and access. A narrow gate can rule out the larger mower.
  • Obstacles to trim around: trees, beds, play sets, fence lines.
  • Condition. Tall or overgrown grass costs more on the first visit.
  • How often the crew comes. A weekly lawn is quicker to cut than one left for three weeks.
  • Travel. A yard far from the crew's other stops costs more to reach.
  • Where you live. Local wages and fuel differ, and LawnStarter's cost study reports higher prices per visit where the mowing season is short, because crews there have fewer working months in a year.

Fertilizing, weed control, aeration and leaf cleanup are separate services with their own prices. Ask for each one as its own line so you can compare companies like for like.

Your own number

How to estimate your annual cost

  1. Measure your lawn. Open the measuring tool, enter your address and paint the grass on the satellite view. The tool adds up the square footage of what you painted. The lawn square footage calculator covers the same job if you already have dimensions.
  2. Get a local per-visit quote. Give two or three companies the grass area and ask for the price of one mowing visit. Ask what the visit includes and whether the first visit costs more.
  3. Multiply by the visits in your growing season. Ask each company how many visits it schedules in a year for a lawn like yours. Growing season length varies widely from one part of the country to another, and from year to year with the weather. LotSite has no source for visits per year, so this page does not give one.

annual mowing cost = price per visit × visits per year

Both numbers come from a local company. Add any other services you want, each at its own quoted price, to get the full year.

Doing the routine work yourself changes the sum from a company's price to your own time and materials. The DIY versus hiring guide walks through that choice, and the fertilizer, seed and mowing time calculators turn a measured area into quantities and hours.

What these numbers are. LawnStarter says the study covers more than 2 million completed mowing jobs in more than 2,000 cities, and that its averages are weighted by job volume and represent the areas it serves. That makes them one company's completed-job data. They are not an official statistic, and they are not a quote for your yard.

How to use them. As a check on a quote, not a replacement for one. A regional average mixes small city lawns with large suburban ones, so your own price can sit well above or below it for ordinary reasons. LotSite has not broken these figures down by state or by city and has not adjusted them in any way. For a price in your city, the city pages open the satellite view for 50 metros so you can measure first and then ask locally.
