Why It Matters

Why knowing your lot size matters

Nearly every quote you'll ever get for outdoor work starts with one number. Landscapers price by the square foot. Fence installers work from your perimeter. Materials — mulch, gravel, sod, topsoil — are all sold by coverage area, so an accurate lot size is the difference between one trip to the store and three.

It matters in real estate too: lot size drives comparable-property value, and if you're buying, it's worth verifying the MLS number against the county parcel before you close. And for yard care, fertilizer and seed rates are stated per 1,000 sq ft — guessing wrong wastes product or burns the lawn.

How to find your lot size — 5 ways

1. Enter your address at LotSite. See satellite imagery of the property and trace your visible boundaries to measure the area. Fastest free option — no signup.

2. Check your county assessor's website. The recorded lot size — most accurate public source, but every county portal is different, and finding the parcel record can take a half hour.

3. Look at your property survey. The most legally precise source if you have one from closing; every boundary segment is measured by a licensed surveyor.

4. Zillow or Redfin. Approximate figures from public data, and only for listed properties.

5. Measure it physically. A tape measure or measuring wheel is very accurate but time-consuming — and hard on irregular lots. For every method in depth, see how to measure your property or the lot size by address guide. Just need the grass area for lawn care? Try the lawn size calculator.

The Basics

Lot size vs. living area

Lot size is the total area of the property — everything inside the boundary, in square feet or acres. Living area is the interior square footage of the home itself. Real estate listings show both, and they mean very different things: a "2,000 sq ft home" can sit on a 6,000 sq ft city lot or a 2-acre rural parcel. For the shape of your lot — width, depth, and frontage — see lot dimensions by address.
