How Long Does It Take to Mow a Lawn?

It's a throughput problem: cutting width × speed = square feet per minute. Here's the math for every mower type — and what your yard's obstacles add.

Mowing time reduces to simple throughput. A mower cuts a strip as wide as its deck, minus the few inches of overlap every pass needs — call it 85% of deck width effectively. Multiply by how fast you move and you get lawn per minute. A 21-inch push mower at a typical 250 ft/min walking pace: 1.75 ft × 0.85 × 250 ≈ 370 sq ft per minute. A 48-inch zero-turn at 500 ft/min: 4 ft × 0.85 × 500 ≈ 1,700 sq ft per minute — four and a half times the throughput.

Everything else is corrections to that number: turns at the end of each pass, obstacles that force you to slow and steer, trimming the edges the deck can't reach, and emptying the bag. Open rectangular lawns run close to the raw math; complicated yards don't.

Times

Cutting time by mower

Mower5,000 sq ft1 acre
Push reel (20")~25–30 min3.5–4.5 hrs
Push gas (21")~15–20 min2.5–3 hrs
Self-propelled (22")~12–17 min2–2.5 hrs
Riding mower (42")~5–8 min~1 hr
Zero-turn (48–60")~3–5 min30–45 min

Open-lawn cutting time only — trimming, edging, and cleanup are additional. Obstacle-heavy yards run 25–50% over these figures.

Worked Example

What your season actually costs in hours

Take a 7,500 sq ft lawn with a self-propelled 22-inch mower (roughly 435 sq ft/min effective). Raw cutting time: 7,500 ÷ 435 ≈ 17 minutes. Add a treed backyard and beds to steer around (+30%), ten minutes of trimming and edging, and setup and cleanup — call it 40–45 minutes door to door. At roughly 28 mows a season (weekly spring through fall in most of the country), that's about 20 hours a year behind the mower.

That seasonal number is the one that matters for decisions. It's what a mowing service is actually quoting you to take over — services price largely off lawn square footage, which is why they'll ask for it or estimate it before quoting. And it's the number that answers the upgrade question: on this lawn a riding mower saves maybe 10 minutes a mow — under 5 hours a season — which is hard to justify. On a half-acre lawn, the same upgrade saves 30+ hours a season, which is easy.

Pattern is free speed. Turns are dead time — a walk-behind loses several seconds to every 180° turn. Mow along the lawn's long axis and you halve the turn count: a 50 × 100 ft lawn cut in 100-ft rows takes about 34 passes with a 21-inch deck; cut in 50-ft rows it takes 67. At even five seconds a turn, that's roughly three minutes saved per mow on this one lawn — free, every week, just by picking the long direction.

The input everything depends on is your actual grass area — not lot size. A "10,000 sq ft lot" with a house, driveway, and deck might carry 5,500 sq ft of mowable grass, nearly halving every time estimate above. Whether you're sizing a mower purchase, sanity-checking a service quote, or deciding if the DIY hours are worth it (the DIY vs. pro guide runs that comparison), start from the measured grass number.
